Introduction to the Course
The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) is delighted to announce the launch of its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the International Human Rights System. This course will be led by the esteemed Prof. (Dr) YSR Murthy, who serves as the Pro Vice Chancellor at the SRM School of Law. The course is hosted on SWAYAM, the Government of India’s online learning platform designed to provide free educational resources.
About Prof. (Dr) YSR Murthy
Prof. YSR Murthy has an extensive background in the field of human rights. Prior to joining SRMIST, he was the Founding Vice Chancellor of RV University in Bengaluru. His previous roles include serving as a Professor & Registrar and the Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights Studies at OP Jindal Global University in Sonipat. From 1994 to 2009, he contributed to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in various capacities, including Director of the Policy, Research, Programmes and Projects Division.
Prof. Murthy is also a published author, with notable works such as ‘Halsbury’s Laws of India – Human Rights’ and ‘Human Rights Handbook’ by LexisNexis Butterworths. He has edited the NHRC’s Annual Journal on Human Rights for several years. His academic credentials include a British Chevening Fellowship for his MA in Human Rights from the University of London, and he holds a PhD from Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University, Chennai.
Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes
This course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of human rights theories and the international legal and institutional frameworks that support them. It will also explore regional mechanisms for the protection and promotion of human rights. By the end of the course, participants will:
- Understand the theoretical foundations and concepts of human rights.
- Grasp the nature and scope of international human rights law, including the UN Charter and treaty-based machinery.
- Apply international human rights law to real-world problems.
- Analyze complex human rights issues using relevant legal provisions.
Course Details
The course is suitable for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, carrying 4 credits. It spans 15 weeks, with a total of 45 hours of content, including e-learning materials, reading resources, forum discussions, and assignments. The course will commence on July 6, 2026, and conclude on October 25, 2026. Enrollment is open until August 6, 2026. While there are no strict prerequisites, prior exposure to undergraduate courses in Social Sciences or Law is recommended.
