Anil Agrawal has officially stepped down from his role as a member of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), concluding his service on July 14 after a three-year tenure. Agrawal joined the esteemed antitrust body in September 2023. In a heartfelt LinkedIn announcement, he expressed his appreciation to the Indian government for the opportunity to contribute to the CCI’s mission.
Agrawal remarked, “It has been a privilege to be associated with this important institution, which plays a vital role in promoting fair competition, protecting consumer welfare, and supporting innovation-led growth in the Indian economy.” His time at the CCI has been a significant chapter in a public service career that spans various domains, including law enforcement, governance, technology, and competition regulation.
A distinguished member of the 1988-batch Indian Police Service from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Agrawal has dedicated nearly 35 years to policing. Earlier this year, he was the Director General of the Uttar Pradesh Police, overseeing its training and telecommunications sectors. His previous roles include Additional Director General of Police for Information Technology, Electronics, Cybercrime, and Communication Systems from April 2015 to August 2017. During this period, Agrawal was instrumental in the creation of UP100, an emergency management system for the state’s police force.
His contributions to law enforcement are extensive. As Director of Traffic in Uttar Pradesh, Agrawal initiated an integrated traffic management system across 12 cities. Moreover, he served as Member Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board between December 2012 and September 2014. His tenure with the Sashastra Seema Bal lasted nearly six years, where he held key positions as Deputy Inspector General and later as Inspector General. Throughout his policing career, Agrawal also served as Senior Superintendent of Police in various locations, including the Special Task Force and in Lucknow, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, and Faizabad.
Following his tenure in policing, Agrawal contributed over five years to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. At DPIIT, he was pivotal in advancing the Startup India and Make in India initiatives, as well as overseeing the leather and cement sectors. He also played a crucial role in the development of the Open Network for Digital Commerce.

Agrawal’s academic credentials include a Bachelor of Engineering degree in civil engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. Before embarking on his illustrious career in the Indian Police Service, he worked as a software engineer at Engineers India Limited from 1984 to 1987.
