Justice Alok Kumar Verma Resigns from Uttarakhand High Court
Justice Alok Kumar Verma of the Uttarakhand High Court has officially submitted his resignation, with the effective date set for April 30, 2026. This development was confirmed by a notification from the Law Ministry, released on May 27. The notification states, “Justice Alok Kumar Verma has tendered his resignation from the office of Judge, Uttarakhand High Court, in pursuance of proviso (a) to clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution, with effect from 30.04.2026.” This move marks an early departure as Justice Verma was originally scheduled to retire in August 2026.
Born on August 16, 1964, in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Justice Verma pursued his education at DAV (PG) Degree College in Varanasi. He earned his LL.B. from Harish Chandra Postgraduate College in 1985. He embarked on his judicial career by joining the Uttar Pradesh Judicial Service in 1987 as part of the 1982 batch, with his initial posting as a Munsif (Civil Judge, Junior Division) in Jhansi.
Throughout his career, Justice Verma served in multiple districts across Uttar Pradesh. Following the creation of Uttarakhand as a separate state in November 2000, he opted for judicial service in the newly formed state. His service record includes roles as District Judge in Tehri Garhwal, Chamoli, Udham Singh Nagar, and Dehradun. Justice Verma also held the significant administrative position of Principal Secretary, Law-cum-Legal Remembrancer to the Government of Uttarakhand.
Justice Verma’s appointment as an additional judge of the Uttarakhand High Court came on May 22, 2019, and he took his official oath on May 27, 2019. He was later confirmed as a permanent judge on May 25, 2021. His tenure in the judiciary has been marked by commitment and significant contributions to the legal landscape of Uttarakhand.
