The legal community mourns the loss of Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu, a distinguished judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 59. Sources confirm that Justice Sindhu, who had been battling health issues for several months, passed at approximately 3 a.m. at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.
Appointed to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in July 2017 following a robust 25-year legal practice, Justice Sindhu was the third senior-most judge at the time of his untimely demise. He was expected to retire in April 2029. The High Court announced his passing with a heartfelt message, stating, “With profound grief and sorrow, it is informed that Hon’ble Mr. Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu, Judge of this Court, left for his heavenly abode today, i.e., 28 June 2026, at 02.50 a.m.” The message also detailed that his cremation would be held at his native village, Masoodpur, Tehsil and District Hansi, Haryana, at 5.00 p.m. the same day.
Born on April 4, 1967, in an agriculturist family in Masudpur village, Hisar district, Justice Sindhu laid his educational foundations at the Government High School in his village. He pursued legal studies at Panjab University, earning his LLB in 1992, and subsequently registered with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana that same year.
Throughout his esteemed career, Justice Sindhu specialized in civil, criminal, constitutional, and service law, with his practice primarily situated at the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh. His legal acumen led him to represent numerous government institutions. He held the role of Additional Central Government Standing Counsel in 1999 and was appointed as Additional Government Pleader for the Union Territory of Chandigarh in 2000.
Justice Sindhu further served as Deputy Advocate General for Haryana from 2004 to 2008, and as Additional Advocate General for Punjab from September 2008 to December 2009. He held a similar role for Haryana from December 2009, before resigning in February 2013 to return to private practice.
His judicial journey took a significant turn when he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in July 2017, and later, in December 2018, he was confirmed as a permanent judge. His contributions to the legal field and his legacy will be remembered by colleagues and the many lives he touched throughout his career.
