The Supreme Court of India has initiated suo motu proceedings in the troubling case surrounding the death of Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old former model and actress, known for her title as “Miss Pune.” Twisha was discovered deceased under suspicious circumstances at her marital residence in Bhopal on May 12. The bench, comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, is set to deliberate on this matter on May 25.
Twisha Sharma, originally from Noida, had tied the knot with Samarth Singh, a lawyer based in Bhopal, just five months prior to her untimely death. The two had met through a dating app. On the day in question, Twisha was found hanging from a gymnastic rope in her home, raising serious concerns about the circumstances of her demise.
Twisha’s family has accused her in-laws of inflicting domestic violence and harassment, leading to her tragic death. They have called for a second post-mortem to determine the true cause of her passing. Responding to these claims, the Madhya Pradesh High Court issued an order on May 22 for a second autopsy to be conducted in Bhopal, with a team of doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi undertaking the examination.
The Katara Hills police station has registered a First Information Report (FIR) to investigate the case, and media outlets have reported that both Twisha’s husband and mother-in-law have been charged with dowry harassment. This case has attracted significant attention due to the high-profile nature of Twisha’s in-laws. Samarth Singh is a practicing lawyer, while his mother, Giribala Singh, is a retired judge currently serving as the President of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
In legal developments, Giribala Singh was granted anticipatory bail by a sessions court on May 15. However, Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, has approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court, seeking to have this bail revoked. Meanwhile, Samarth Singh’s request for anticipatory bail was denied on May 18, and his bar license was subsequently suspended by the Bar Council of India on May 22.
