Surojit Nath Mitra Named Advocate General of West Bengal

Senior Advocate Surojit Nath Mitra has been appointed as the new Advocate General for the state of West Bengal. This significant appointment was confirmed through an official notification released earlier today.

His appointment follows the resignation of Senior Advocate Kishore Datta, who stepped down from the position after the All India Trinamool Congress suffered a loss in the State Assembly elections to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Surojit Nath Mitra, a distinguished figure in the legal community, began his legal practice in March 1983. He holds a robust academic background, having studied law and economics at the University of Calcutta from 1978 to 1982. As an expert in civil and commercial law, Mitra brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

Over his extensive career spanning more than four decades, Mitra has represented a broad spectrum of clients, including corporate entities and private litigants, showcasing his versatility and expertise in the field. His legal proficiency is particularly evident in civil and commercial law matters.

In addition to his advocacy, Mitra has made significant contributions as an arbitrator in commercial disputes, further cementing his reputation as a seasoned legal professional.

One of his notable recent involvements was in 2023, where he represented the Governor (Chancellor) in a high-profile case that challenged the appointment procedures of vice-chancellors in various state universities. This case underscored his legal acumen and commitment to upholding judicial processes.

Mitra’s appointment as the Advocate General is expected to bring his extensive experience and a fresh perspective to the legal framework of West Bengal, potentially influencing significant legal proceedings and policy decisions in the state.
