NBDSA Penalizes Zee News for Invasive Interview of Mourning Mother

NBDSA Imposes Fine on Zee News for Privacy Breach

The News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA) has levied a fine of ₹25,000 against Zee News for conducting and broadcasting an intrusive interview with a grieving mother, whose son was implicated in a murder case. This decision was articulated by NBDSA Chairperson Justice A.K. Sikri, who emphasized that Zee News had breached established norms of decency and privacy. The authority has mandated the removal of the contentious footage from all Zee News platforms.

Background of the Complaint

Advocate Indrajeet Ghorpade lodged a complaint regarding the airing of a program on June 10, 2025, which included a Zee News reporter persistently questioning the mother of the accused, despite her evident distress and continuous pleas to be left alone. The incident was broadcasted on television and subsequently uploaded to digital platforms.

NBDSA’s Findings and Observations

The NBDSA’s order from May 19 highlighted that the broadcast showed the mother visibly distressed, howling, and crying. The authority concluded that interviewing the mother in such a state served no meaningful purpose concerning the alleged crime and demonstrated a lack of sensitivity. NBDSA found that the broadcast violated principles of good taste and decency, as well as privacy guidelines, which require broadcasters to exercise discretion and sensitivity, particularly in distressing situations.

Zee News’s Defense and NBDSA’s Response

Zee News defended its actions by stating that the segment was part of field reporting on a high-profile murder case, with several media outlets present. They claimed the reporter eventually withdrew upon realizing the emotional gravity of the situation. However, the NBDSA was unpersuaded, pointing out that the decision to air and host the footage online was a deliberate editorial choice.

Mandates and Future Recommendations

The NBDSA has ordered Zee News to expunge the video from its website, YouTube, and other platforms, and to eliminate any hyperlinks to the footage within a week. The channel must confirm its compliance in writing. Furthermore, the NBDSA recommended institutional corrective measures, urging Zee News to provide training to its field reporters to prevent similar breaches from occurring in future broadcasts.
