The official notification stated, “The Chairman, Rajya Sabha has, on the 20 May, 2026, nominated Dr Menaka Guruswamy, Member, Rajya Sabha to be a member of the Joint Committee on the Corporate Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026.” This committee is tasked with a comprehensive examination of the proposed amendments to the Corporate Laws.
The Corporate Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, first introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 23, 2026, by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, seeks to modify key legislative frameworks, namely the Companies Act, 2013, and the Limited Liability Partnership Act, 2008. These acts are pivotal in regulating the incorporation, governance, and dissolution of companies and LLPs in India. The proposed amendments aim to refine the legal infrastructure underpinning corporate entities, enhancing clarity and operational efficiency.
Following its introduction, the bill was promptly referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee, highlighting the necessity for a meticulous review before its subsequent consideration in Parliament. Dr. Guruswamy, elected to the Rajya Sabha as a representative of West Bengal, was nominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on February 27, 2026, and subsequently elected on March 16, 2026.
