Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur, known for his dignified presence in the courtroom, has left an indelible mark on the legal landscape of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. His tenure as Chief Justice, beginning in the summer of 2023, was a period marked by stability and judicial restraint. Although originally from Jammu & Kashmir, with a brief interlude at the Bombay High Court, Justice Thakur swiftly adapted to his new role, becoming a respected figure in the legal community.

For advocates who appeared before him, Justice Thakur was a judge who truly listened. In a crowded courtroom, where securing a judge’s undivided attention is often a Herculean task, Justice Thakur stood out for his ability to engage deeply with the arguments presented before him. Upon his retirement on April 24, 2026, after nearly three years as Chief Justice, Justice Thakur left behind a legacy of thoughtful leadership. His tenure allowed him to become a familiar and respected figure within the Bar of Amaravati, leaving a lasting impact on the court’s culture and history. His successor, Chief Justice Lisa Gill, acknowledged his contributions to the judicial history of Andhra Pradesh.
