Amitabh Jhunjhunwala Held in CBI Custody for Alleged Fraud

CBI Custody for Amitabh Jhunjhunwala

Amitabh Jhunjhunwala, the former managing director of the Reliance Group led by Anil Ambani, has been remanded to the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for five days due to allegations of bank loan fraud. The decision was rendered by Judge JP Darekar of a special CBI court in Mumbai, mandating that Jhunjhunwala remain in CBI custody until June 5.

Allegations of Financial Misconduct

The charges stem from an investigation into the alleged diversion and misuse of approximately ₹2,000 crore in loan funds. These funds were reportedly sanctioned by a consortium of banks to entities linked to the Reliance-ADAG group. The CBI has accused Jhunjhunwala of channeling these funds to shell companies at his direction, resulting in significant financial losses for the lending banks. Although Jhunjhunwala has not yet been formally charged in this case, the CBI has indicated that their investigation is still ongoing.

In a related legal matter, Jhunjhunwala is also in judicial custody concerning a money laundering case under scrutiny by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). A special ED court in Delhi authorized the CBI to take Jhunjhunwala into custody in Mumbai for arrest and interrogation related to the primary offense. On June 1, after being transferred from Tihar Jail via a transit production warrant, Jhunjhunwala was formally arrested by the CBI in Mumbai.

Jhunjhunwala was sent to judicial custody, with the court acknowledging the difficulties of transporting him from Delhi. During these proceedings, his legal counsel, advocate Mudit Jain, contested the timing of his production, asserting that the warrant stipulated his production on June 5. Nonetheless, the court allowed the CBI to proceed with the arrest, emphasizing adherence to legal protocols.

Wider Investigation into Reliance Group

This case is part of a larger inquiry into alleged financial irregularities within entities associated with industrialist Anil Ambani. These entities are also under examination by the ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Public Prosecutor Jitendar Sharma represented the CBI during the proceedings, underscoring the seriousness with which the agency is treating these allegations.
