A significant fire erupted at the district court complex in Gurugram on Sunday, causing extensive damage to the main court building. The fire originated in the record room of the lower court premises, which housed numerous paper records. Firefighters were deployed promptly and battled the flames for several hours before bringing the situation under control.
The intensity of the fire led to the partial collapse of the ceiling, impacting the structural integrity of the building. As a result, the main court premises have been sealed, and access to the advocates’ chambers is currently restricted.
Due to the damage, regular judicial activities in the main court building have been suspended as of May 25 (Monday). It has been decided that no adverse orders will be issued in cases scheduled for that day. Lawyers have been advised to refrain from visiting the court complex unless it is absolutely necessary.
In a precautionary move, C-Block parking and gate number 6 have been closed. Reports from the Hindustan Times suggest that the large volume of paper files contributed significantly to the fire’s spread. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries.
Police have limited access to certain areas of the complex as cooling operations continue post-containment of the blaze. The full extent of the damage to court records and the infrastructure is still being assessed. Authorities are planning a comprehensive inspection once the site is deemed secure. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
