Notable Transition in India’s Legal Sector
In a significant development within India’s legal landscape, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM) is set to witness the departure of two of its prominent Intellectual Property (IP) partners, Mukul Baveja and Apoorva Murali. The duo is preparing to join Trilegal, a leading law firm, with the induction process currently underway.
Background and Expertise of Mukul Baveja
Mukul Baveja has been a pillar at SAM for the past decade, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the firm. A 2004 alumnus of Amity Law School, Baveja further honed his skills with an LL.M. from Queen Mary University of London in 2011. His illustrious career, spanning over two decades, is marked by his adept handling of both contentious and non-contentious IP matters.
Baveja’s proficiency extends across a range of IP issues, including trademarks, copyrights, and patents, serving a diverse array of industries. His expertise is not limited to advising; he skillfully navigates cross-border IP transactions, such as licensing, franchising, and technology transfers. Baveja regularly represents both domestic and international clients in IP disputes, appearing before Indian courts and arbitration panels, including the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the National Internet Exchange of India.
Apoorva Murali’s Contributions to SAM
Apoorva Murali, another distinguished name in the IP domain, has been associated with SAM for 12 years. A 2014 graduate from IIT Kharagpur, Murali brings over a decade of experience in managing complex intellectual property challenges, especially those tied to the commercial exploitation of IP assets.
Murali’s expertise encompasses a broad spectrum of IP-related issues, including patents, trademarks, designs, and copyrights. She is adept at advising on and enforcing issues related to trademarks, passing off, copyrights, designs, the internet and technology, confidential information, data protection, and customs. Her representation of clients before various judicial and regulatory forums in India highlights her deep-rooted expertise and commitment to the field.
Continued Movement to Trilegal
The departure of Baveja and Murali follows closely on the heels of another significant transition last month when Rohit Tiwari, a Capital Markets Partner from SAM, also made the move to Trilegal. This trend underscores Trilegal’s growing appeal in the legal market as a destination for top-tier legal talent.
At the time of this report, both SAM and Trilegal have been approached for comments on the impending transitions.
