Since the beginning of this year, King’s College London’s Dickson Poon School of Law has partnered with Lucio AI to equip law students and faculty with the skills needed to navigate AI’s role in contemporary legal practice. Now, two terms into this cooperation, their AI Literacy Initiative has become a benchmark for integrating cutting-edge technology into legal education. This initiative, which is flexible and non-credit based, is available to all law students and staff, aiming to keep pace with the fast-evolving technological landscape.
Designed to foster critical, safe, and effective engagement with AI, the initiative addresses the sector’s evolving needs as AI becomes integral to legal education, training, and professional practice. It offers a self-guided, exploratory approach, allowing participants to engage at their own pace, free from the pressures of academic grading.
Core Components of the AI Literacy Initiative
The program consists of three essential components:
- Hands-on Access: Participants gain practical experience with leading legal AI platforms, including Lucio AI, one of four pre-approved platforms. These tools support essential legal tasks such as research, review, and drafting.
- Practitioner-led Workshops: These sessions provide direct insights from industry professionals about how legal firms are integrating AI into everyday operations.
- Self-paced Online Course: The course, titled “AI Literacy for Law,” covers fundamental concepts, real-world applications, effective AI prompting, and emerging regulatory issues.
These elements combine to give learners a solid, practical grasp of AI’s transformative impact on the legal industry, moving beyond theoretical knowledge to actionable skills.
Professor Dan Hunter highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “Artificial intelligence is crucial for the next generation of lawyers. This initiative demonstrates that, with appropriate guidance and structure, students can learn to question AI, refine it, and confidently support their work. Legal education is transitioning from theory to practice.”
