Tushar Mehta Retained as Solicitor General for Three More Years; Five ASGs Re-appointed for Supreme Court

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has officially sanctioned the continuation of Tushar Mehta as the Solicitor General of India, extending his tenure by another three years. This decision, outlined in a directive from the Department of Personnel and Training dated June 20, marks the start of this new term on July 1, 2026. His appointment is, however, subject to future directives, whichever comes first. Mehta has served as the Solicitor General since October 10, 2018, with his previous re-appointment effective from July 1, 2023, set to last until June 30, 2026.

In addition, the committee has endorsed the re-appointment of five Additional Solicitors General (ASGs) for the Supreme Court. Senior Advocates Vikramjit Banerjee and KM Nataraj have been re-assigned as ASGs starting July 1, 2026. Similarly, Senior Advocates Suryaprakash V Raju, N Venkataraman, and Aishwarya Bhati will resume their roles from June 30, 2026. These appointments, like Mehta’s, are for a three-year term or until further notice.

Vikramjit Banerjee originally took up the ASG mantle on March 5, 2018, with a re-appointment effective from July 1, 2023. KM Nataraj joined as ASG on January 14, 2019, and was also re-appointed from July 1, 2023. Suryaprakash V Raju, N Venkataraman, and Aishwarya Bhati were initially appointed as ASGs on June 30, 2020, and their re-appointments took effect on June 30, 2023.

The committee has also validated the extension of Senior Advocate Chetan Sharma’s term as ASG for the Delhi High Court. Sharma’s tenure has been extended for an additional six months starting July 1, 2026, or until subsequent orders are issued. Initially appointed on July 1, 2020, Sharma’s latest re-appointment began on July 1, 2023, with an original end date of June 30, 2026.
