Delhi High Court Dismisses CBI's Appeal Against Chitra Ramkrishna's Bail in NSE Case

Delhi High Court Upholds Bail for Former NSE MD Chitra Ramkrishna

The Delhi High Court, in a significant ruling on Wednesday, dismissed the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) appeal challenging the bail granted to Chitra Ramkrishna, the former Managing Director of the National Stock Exchange (NSE). This decision comes in the wake of allegations surrounding illegal phone tapping activities at the NSE.

Justice Madhu Jain, presiding over the case, upheld the trial court’s decision from December 2022, which had initially awarded bail to Ramkrishna. The case alleges that between 2009 and 2017, unauthorized interceptions of phone calls of NSE employees occurred.

The CBI’s contention revolves around claims that Chitra Ramkrishna, in collaboration with former NSE CEO Ravi Narain, Executive Vice-President Ravi Varanasi, and Head of Premises Mahesh Haldipur, orchestrated the interception of calls. It is alleged that they engaged iSEC Services under the pretense of conducting a study on cyber vulnerabilities at the exchange.

The trial court’s decision to grant bail was seen as a setback for the CBI, which had subsequently approached the Delhi High Court seeking a reversal of the order. However, the High Court’s decision to uphold the bail emphasizes the judiciary’s stance on the matter.

This ruling marks a pivotal point in the ongoing legal proceedings related to the NSE phone tapping allegations. The case continues to draw attention due to the high-profile nature of the individuals involved and the implications for corporate governance within major financial institutions.
