Ganesh Chandru Enhances Kochhar & Co’s Arbitration Expertise
In a strategic move to bolster its national arbitration and litigation practice, Kochhar & Co has appointed Ganesh Chandru as a Senior Partner in its Chennai office. Chandru, an accomplished legal professional with a focus on international arbitration, aims to enhance the firm’s capabilities across India.
Chandru is a graduate of Madras Law College and the National University of Singapore. He is qualified to practice law in India, England & Wales, and Singapore. His affiliations include being a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, and he acts as a Director for the India Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in London.
With a career spanning over thirty years, Chandru is recognized for his expertise in both arbitration and litigation. He specializes in guiding clients through international commercial arbitrations under the frameworks of organizations such as SIAC, ICC, LCIA, SCMA, and UNCITRAL, as well as ad hoc arbitrations. His experience also covers arbitrations seated in India under the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996, and he frequently appears before courts and statutory tribunals nationwide.
Chandru’s comprehensive experience includes disputes in industries such as infrastructure, construction, oil and gas, power and energy. He is also adept in handling cases related to telecommunications, information technology, banking and finance, joint ventures, shareholder agreements, and various corporate and commercial matters.
Before returning to India in 2015, Chandru spent over 16 years honing his skills in Singapore, where he was associated with top-tier international and local law firms. Between 2002 and 2007, he contributed significantly to the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) as Counsel and Assistant Registrar. During this period, he managed around 500 arbitrations and played a key role in expanding SIAC’s relationship with India.
Prior to his latest appointment, Chandru was a Partner at Dua Associates. Rohit Kochhar, the Founding and Managing Partner of Kochhar & Co, expressed his enthusiasm about Chandru’s addition to the firm. “Kochhar & Co was one of the first national law firms to establish a presence in Chennai more than two decades ago, underscoring our commitment to the region and our goal of developing a comprehensive pan-India practice. Ganesh’s arrival enhances this foundation, particularly in international arbitration and litigation,” he stated.
Chandru commented on his new role, “I am excited to contribute to and expand Kochhar & Co’s esteemed arbitration and litigation practice, while continuing to deliver top-tier legal services and practical, commercially driven solutions to our clients.”
