Trinamool Congress Challenges Bank Account Freeze in Calcutta High Court

The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has filed a petition with the Calcutta High Court contesting the decision by Bidhannagar police to freeze its three bank accounts. This crucial hearing is scheduled to take place before Justice Saugata Bhattacharya on Thursday, June 25. Earlier, Senior Advocate Kishore Datta requested an earlier hearing on Tuesday, but the court did not accommodate this request.

The TMC is currently facing internal strife after experiencing setbacks in the recent State Assembly elections. The freezing of the party’s bank accounts was prompted by a complaint from Biswanath Das, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) who has been at odds with the party. Das, who recently secured his assembly seat in the Jaynagar constituency under the TMC banner, alleged large-scale financial fraud. However, the TMC contends that Das’s allegations lack substantive details and are unfounded. The party notes that Das was previously compensated with ₹25 lakh from these very accounts.

In its plea, the TMC describes the claims as “completely baseless, mala fide, and motivated.” The party argues that the police’s decision to freeze the accounts was made without any preliminary investigation into the allegations, leading to severe disruption of their operations.

The petition further highlights what it perceives as a “pattern of persecution” against TMC members, suggesting that the police action is part of a broader scheme of political vendetta orchestrated by the ruling party in West Bengal. According to the TMC, this misuse of state machinery for political ends is a troubling development.

Additionally, the TMC has requested the court to annul the first information report (FIR) filed by the police in this case. The party is also seeking a suspension of the ongoing investigation while their plea remains under adjudication.
