Satya Darshi Sanjay Named New Advocate General of Bihar

Senior Advocate Satya Darshi Sanjay has been officially appointed as the Advocate General of Bihar. This appointment was confirmed by a notification from the Bihar government’s Law Department, stating that the Governor has appointed Sanjay under Article 165(1) of the Indian Constitution. His appointment will become effective upon assuming the position.

Satya Darshi Sanjay, who currently serves as an Additional Solicitor General, frequently appears before the Supreme Court of India. With a well-established career, he has represented the Union government in numerous cases before the Patna High Court, solidifying his extensive experience with litigation in Bihar. His initial appointment as Additional Solicitor General of India for the Patna High Court was in 2015. He was subsequently reappointed for a second term in 2018, marking his distinction as Bihar’s first Additional Solicitor General.

In September 2024, Sanjay took on the role of Additional Solicitor General of India at the Supreme Court for a three-year term. An alumnus of the Campus Law Centre at the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, Sanjay has practiced both at the Patna High Court and the Supreme Court of India. His legal acumen is reflected in his involvement with significant cases on behalf of the Union government and his engagement in various constitutional courts across the country.

The position of Advocate General became vacant recently following the resignation of Senior Advocate Prashant Kumar Shahi. Shahi, who was appointed in 2023 during the tenure of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, stepped down after Samrat Chaudhary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was sworn in as the new Chief Minister. The change in state leadership prompted Shahi’s resignation, allowing the new administration to select its own Advocate General.
