The Central government has officially confirmed the appointment of seven judicial officers to serve as judges of the Delhi High Court. This significant development was announced on Saturday and marks a pivotal step in addressing the current judicial vacancies in the court.
Among the newly appointed judges, Nivedita Anil Sharma and Nisha Sahay Saxena have been elevated to the positions of permanent judges. Their appointments reflect the culmination of extensive legal careers and contributions to the judiciary.
In addition to Sharma and Saxena, Sanjay Sharma, Bharat Parashar, Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt, and Arun Bhardwaj have been appointed as additional judges. Notably, Arun Bhardwaj currently holds the position of Registrar General of the Delhi High Court, highlighting his extensive experience and leadership within the judicial system.
The appointments are largely based on the recommendations put forth by the Supreme Court Collegium, which on September 10, proposed eight names for consideration. However, the Central government has approved only seven of those recommendations, with Gurvinder Pal Singh not being included in the final list of appointees.
The Delhi High Court is currently operating with 44 judges, despite having a sanctioned capacity for 60. This results in a total of 16 vacancies, which the recent appointments aim to address in part. The addition of these new judges is expected to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the court’s operations.
